FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team secured its first win during its Florida road trip Friday, shutting out Nichols 6-0.
After two scoreless innings, the Pioneers broke through in the third, scoring four runs on four hits. Second baseman George Jester III started the scoring with a bases loaded, two-RBI single to left, and then in the next at-bat, first baseman Zach Demmon cleared with bases with a two-RBI double.
Then in the seventh inning, third baseman Jonny Frese brought home two more runs on a two-out single to left to put the score at 6-0, where it would remain until the end of the game.
The Pioneers had 11 total hits and played a flawless game defensively, recording zero errors.
Despite the great offensive and defensive performances, the star of the show was the Pioneers' starting pitcher, junior Mike Boushley.
Boushley picked up his first win on the season in a complete game, shutout performance. Boushley struck out eight batters while scattering seven hits. Boushley only experienced trouble in the eighth inning, when Nichols got three men on base. However Boushley got out the jam with the help of left fielder Ryan Lehmann, who gunned down a runner at home to end the inning.
The Pioneers conclude their road trip tomorrow with a 9 a.m. contest with Fredonia St.
