Edgewood Eagles soars past Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team fell to Edgewood College, 18-6, in a nonconference contest on Tuesday at Kendall Murray Field.
Pioneers' starter senior Zach Ryan couldn't get through the first inning as he allowed six runs on three hits in a third of a inning. Reliever Davis Lenzen got UW-Platteville out of the inning with a double-play, 6-0.
The Pioneers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. Junior Ryan Duva started inning with single, and moved to third on a double from Casey Schroeder. They both scored a batter later when freshman George Jester III singled to right field.
The Eagles scored two runs off Davis in the second frame increasing their lead to 8-2.
Jester blasted a one-out solo homer to put the Pioneers within five, 8-3.
Edgewood took advantage of a couple free bases from the Pioneers and an inside the park grand slam put EC ahead 13-3 in the fifth.
The Pioneers were able to load up the bases in the fifth and left two on in the sixth, but were able push one runner across home in each inning, 13-5.
Schroeder delivered a two-out RBI double to make it a 13-6 ballgame.
The Eagles added three insurance runs in the eight and then posted two more runs in the ninth, 18-6.
Junior Tyler Nelson had the Pioneers' best pitching performance as he threw two hitless scoreless relief innings.
UW-Platteville recorded 12 hits with four Pioneers having a multi-hit game. Jester led the hitters with three hits and Schroeder, junior Zach Demmon and senior Tyler Jacobson each tallied two.
The Pioneers return to conference action on Saturday and Sunday when they travel to UW-Oshkosh for a four-game series.
