Warriors Outlast the Pioneers in 13 innings, 9-8
The UW-Platteville lost in 13 innings to Hendrix College, 9-8, on Thursday night at Warrior Field in Conway, Ark.
CONWAY, Ark. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville lost in 13 innings to Hendrix College, 9-8, on Thursday night at Warrior Field in Conway, Ark.
The Pioneers out hit the Warriors 18-13, but left 18 runners on base. Junior Zach Demmon led the team with a perfect 6-for-6 night with a run and RBI, while senior Topher Scheeler recorded a game-high four RBIs on four hits.
The Pioneers didn't waste any time to get on the board scoring a run in the first inning. Scheeler tallied a two-out RBI single scoring freshman Ryan Lehmann.
The Warriors responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
The Pioneers tied the game up at 2-2 in the top of the third when Scheller recorded his second RBI single of the game.
Hendrix regained the lead in the bottom half of the third, scoring two runs and then added two more runs in the fourth and sixth making it a 8-2 ballgame.
In the seventh inning, the Pioneers took advance of three walks and tallied four hits to score six runs and tied up the at 8-8. Demmon pushed the first run of the inning with a RBI single. Scheeler once again came through in the clutch with a two-RBI single through the left side. After a pitching change, Tyler Jacobson put a Demmon across the dish with a ground out to the shortstop. Bobby Patton recorded a RBI and Bobby Bean drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.
After a combined 16 runs in the first six and a half innings both pitching staff finally found their groove and threw six scoreless innings.
In the bottom of the 13th, Hendrix's Ryan Ritz led the frame off with a bunt single and was put in scoring position the next batter on a walk. With no outs, Collin Radack delivered the game winning run with a hit to left field.
Senior Adam Theis started the game for the Pioneers and threw seven innings and gave up eight runs on 10 hits. Junior Shane Murphy came in relief and threw 2.2 scoreless innings and didn't allow a hit but walked three while striking out four batters. Junior Tyler Nelson suffered the loss and tossed 2.1 innings.
The Pioneers return to action on Monday for their home opener against Edgewood. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
