Four Pioneers qualify to NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships
Indianapolis, Ind. – The team and individual qualifiers to the NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships were announced on Sunday, November 11, 2018. The NCAA DIII Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee met to select teams from each region making it on to the national meet. The individual qualifiers are dependent on the teams qualified from each region. From each region, aside from the qualifying teams, seven individuals are selected to participate in the championships.
The University of Wisconsin – Platteville has four student-athletes who have qualified as individuals to the 2018 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships. Two men, Zach Lee and Zach Klokow, and two women, Katie Wardinski and Johanna Meister, were selected to participate in the championships. The four Pioneer student-athletes were also named 2018 USTFCCCA NCAA DIII Cross Country All-Region Honorees by placing in the top 35 at the Midwest Region Cross Country Championships.
Lee, a senior from Franklin, Wisconsin studying software engineering, is returning to the cross country national championships after placing 30th in the 2017 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships, becoming an USTFCCCA All-American. Klokow, a junior from Sheboygan, Wisconsin studying mechanical engineering, is making his national championships debut. Since the Kollege Town Pre-Nationals meet, Klokow has been steadily shaving off time from his 8,000m personal best time. His time crept down to 25:07.7 at the Midwest Region Cross Country Championships.
Wardinski is a senior from West Allis, Wisconsin studying environmental engineering. Meister, a senior from Darlington, Wisconsin, is studying mechanical engineering at UW-Platteville. Both Wardinski and Meister are returning to the cross country national championships, having run in their first NCAA DIII National Championship in 2017.
The NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships will take place on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018. The University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh is serving as the host institution. The races will be run at Lake Breeze Golf Club with the women's race at 11 a.m. and the men's race at noon. Despite expected cool temperatures, the Pioneers look forward to one more race in the 2018 cross country season.
