Kaiser is all-region

Brooke Kaiser (Jr., Warren, Ill.) earned first team all-Midwest Region honors in volleyball. She was chosen to the 12-player team after leading the Pioneers to a 25-9 record. She set a new Pioneer record by hitting .335 on the season. She hit .400 or better 11 times during the season, including .875 against Ripon, setting another UWP record.

Kaiser, Shields named all-WIAC

UW-Platteville record-setting hitters Brooke Kaiser and Kristen Shields earned all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball honors.

Kaiser, a junior from Warren, Ill., earned first-team honors, while Shields, a junior from Montfort, Wis. (Iowa-Grant High School), was an honorable mention selection.

Kaiser transferred from NCAA Division I Southeastern Louisiana University, where she was a two-year starter. She had an immediate impact at UWP, breaking the single-match hitting percentage record in just her fifth match. Kasier hit .875 against Ripon College, with 14 kills in 16 attempts. She went on to establish a new single-season hitting record by hitting .335. Shields became just the fourth player in UWP history to record 1,000 career kills. She now has 1,062 kills and is on pace to break the school record of 1,137, set by Heather Hackl, who concluded her carer in 1997. Shields could also break the career marks for service aces and defensive digs next year. She established a personal high for kills vs. Luther with 25, a very high total by itself, but even more impressive considering the match went just three games.

The Pioneers, with Erin Esser as the lone senior, went 25-9 this season.

Pioneers finish 25-9

UW-Platteville, with just one senior on its roster, concluded its 2000 volleyball season with a 25-9 record and fourth-place finish in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

UW-Oshkosh beat the Pioneers 15-8, 13-15, 15-5, 15-8 Saturday in the third-place game at UW-Whitewater.

The Pioneers were led by Kristen Shields with 17 kills, Brooke Kaiser with 14 and Kari Klaas with 12. Erin Esser, the team's only senior, led the squad with 26 digs. Setters Megan Dankert and Shirley Hunt had 24 and 22 assists, respectively.

Kaiser, in her first year at UWP after starting for two seasons at Division I Southeastern Louisiana University, broke the Pioneer team record by hitting .335 this season. Kaiser (399), Shields (361) and Lindsey Block (337) all had more than 300 kills this season and the junior hitters will be the foundation for the 2001 season.

#1 Warhawks beat Pioneers

Earlier this week, UW-Whitewater earned the top volleyball ranking in NCAA Division III. Friday night, the Warhawks showed UW-Platteville why.

Host UWW beat the Pioneers 15-7, 15-9, 15-3 in the semifinals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament and improved to 35-1 overall. The Pioneers, who came into the tournament as the fifth seed, fell to 25-8 overall.

In Friday's first semifinal, second-seeded UW-River Falls beat third-seeded UW-Oshkosh 15-13, 13-15, 15-6, 4-15, 15-8 to advance to the championship. The Pioneers will tangle with the Titans (27-8) in the third-place game at noon Saturday at Whitewater, while the Warhawks will meet the Falcons (27-9) in the championship match.

No Pioneer was in double figures in kills Friday. Kristen Shields and Lindsey Block each had 8 kills. Shields' 19 digs paced the defensive effort.

Pioneers win, advance to Final Four

UW-Platteville knocked off fourth-seed UW-La Crosse in five games Tuesday to advance to a loaded Final Four in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The fifth-seeded Pioneers beat the home team 16-14, 15-6, 7-15, 15-17, 15-8 to advance to the semifinals Friday at UW-Whitewater. The Pioneers, now 25-7, will face #1 ranked UW-Whitewater, 34-1 on the year, at 7:30 p.m. The other semifinal pits 26-9 UW-River Falls versus 27-7 UW-Oshkosh at 5 p.m. Action concludes Saturday with the third-place game at noon and the championship at 2:30 p.m. The tournament winner earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Four Pioneers recorded double figures in kills, led by Kristen Shields with 20. Lindsey Block had 16, and Brooke Kaiser and Kari Klaas each made 12. Kaiser and Block each had 5 block assists, while Shields added 34 digs. Erin Esser recorded 22 digs, while Megan Dankert had 35 assists, and Shirley Hunt had 20.

UWP finishes regular season 24-7

UW-Platteville swept two home volleyball matches Saturday and finished the regular season with a 24-7 record.

The Pioneers beat Loras 15-11, 15-4, 15-12 and Carroll 15-10, 16-14, 15-6 in the final home matches of the year.

UWP, the fifth seed in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, opens league tournament play Tuesday at fourth-seeded UW-La Crosse. The two teams split during the year, with the Pioneers winning a three-game match at home and losing a five-game match in La Crosse's Mitchell Hall. In the latter contest, the Pioneers were without starting hitter Lindsey Bock.

Block had a huge match against Loras with 17 kills and just one error in 24 attempts. The match was also highlighted by Kristen Shields becoming just the fourth player in school history to surpass 1,000 career kills.

Shields led the second-match effort with 14 kills, while Brooke Kaiser added 13 and Kari Klaas 12. Erin Esser made 14 digs, while Megan Dankert recorded 46 assists.

Pioneers beat Augustana in 5

For the second time in 24 hours, the UW-Platteville volleyball team played a highly regarded opponent in a five-game, two-hour marathan match. But unlike Wednesday's loss to 16th-ranked Wartburg, the Pioneers won the fifth game to earn a hard-fought win.

The Pioneers beat Augustana 15-9, 13-15, 15-5, 14-16, 15-10 in Rock Island, Ill. Thursday night. UWP improved to 22-7 on the year, while Augustana fell to 19-9.

Brooke Kaiser continued her hot hand at the net, with 21 kills and just three errors. Lindsey Blockd added 16 kills, while Kristen Shields scored 13 and Kari Klaas 10. Shields moved within five kills of 1,000 for her career. She also had 29 digs Thursday, and Erin Esser had 18.

The Pioneers close their home season Saturday, playing Loras at 11 a.m. and Carroll at 3 p.m.

Pioneers take 1th-ranked Wartburg to 5 games

The UW-Platteville volleyball team ended one Wartburg College streak and came oh-so-close to ending the other Wednesday night in Williams Fieldhouse

The Pioneers rallied from a two games to nothing deficit to win game three 15-10. That ended the Knights' 40-game winning streak. After the Pioneers took game four 15-9, the Knights' 21-match winning streak was in jeopardy as well. The Pioneers overcame a 7-3 deficit to tie the rally-scored game five at 8-8, but the Knights then scored the next six points on their way to a 15-9 win.

Wartburg, ranked 16th in NCAA Division III, improved to 25-1 with the two-hour victory, while the Pioneers dropped to 21-7 overall.

UWP's Brooke Kaiser led all hitters with 23 kills and just 2 errors in 50 attempts. The junior middle hitter also had 3 service aces, including one to end the third game. Erin Esser, Kristen Shields and Megan Dankert also had 3 aces apiece, with Dankert finishing game four with an ace.

Lindsey Block added 11 kills, while Shields recorded 27 digs. Esser, who was saluted on Senior Night added 13 digs, moving her up to seventh place on the career list with 1,157. Shields, a junior, is currently fourth on that list with 1,366.

Shields is also within 18 of becoming just the fourth player in UWP's history to record 1,000 career kills.

The Pioneers play at a strong Augustana squad tomorrow,. The Vikings are 19-8 on the season. The Pioneers then play host to Loras (11 a.m.) and Carroll (3 pm. Saturday) in a triangular to close the regular season.

Pioneers take aim at Wartburg's 21-match winning streak

Something will have to give Wednesday night when UW-Platteville puts its five-match winning streak up against 16th-ranked Wartburg and its 21-match winning streak.

The two teams battle at 7 p.m. in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers are 21-6 after sweeping Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes UW-Stevens Point, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Superior last week. The Pioneers, 4-4 in the league, clinched fifth place in the tough WIAC and will open the conference tournament at fourth-place UW-La Crosse next Tuesday.

The Knights are 24-1 overall, with their lone loss to Nebraska Wesleyan (which they later avenged). Wartburg, out of Waverly, Iowa, has won its last 38 games, including Monday's three-game sweep of Simpson.

Before the contest, the Pioneers will salute their lone senior, Erin Esser, on Senior Night.

The Pioneers and Knights will also square off in a reserves match, beginning at 5 p.m.

Pioneers win 5th straight

UW-Platteville win its fifth straight volleyball match by whipping UW-Superior 15-6, 15-2, 15-9 Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers, who are 15-1 in games during their winning streak, improved to 21-6 overall. They are 4-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, good for fifth place. The Yellowjackets fell to 4-21, 0-8.

Twelve players saw action for the Pioneers, who hit .256 as a team, compared to the .014 of UWS. Lindsey Block's 9 kills paced the offense, while Erin Esser's 10 digs led the defense.

The Pioneers play nationally-ranked Wartburg in Williams Fieldhouse Wednesday at 7 p.m. The 16th-ranked Knights took a 16-match winning streak into this weekend's play.

Pioneers sweep Blugolds

The UW-Platteville volleyball team earned its 20th victory Friday with a three-game win over UW-Eau Claire Friday in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers beat the Blugolds 15-12, 15-7, 15-13, improving to 20-6 overall and 3-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Blugolds, 18-7 overall, are also 3-4 in league play. A Pioneer home victory over UW-Superior tomorrow (Saturday at 2 p.m.), coupled with an Eau Claire loss at UW-La Crosse would give the Pioneers fourth place in the league and a home match in the opening round of the conference tournament Oct. 31.

Kristen Shields led the Pioneers with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Brooke Kaiser added 10 kills and 6 blocks. Erin Esser chipped in with 10 digs, and Kari Klaas and Jenny Bazala each had 3 blocks. Lindsey Block added 8 kills, and setters Megan Dankert and Shirley Hunt combined for 34 assists.

Pioneers win in 3

The volleyball Pioneers beat their UW-Stevens Point counterparts in three games, snapping UWSP's five-match and 15-game winning streak with a 15-13, 15-9, 16-14 victory. The Pioneers improved to 19-6 overall and 2-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pointers fell to 10-18, 1-6.

UW-Platteville snapped the home team's 15-game winning streak with the hard-fought 15-13 win in game one. In the second game, UWP jumped out to a 14-4 lead and rolled to the 15-9 win. In the third game, Coach Deb Schulman's squad rebounded from an 11-3 deficit to post the 16-14 win.

Brooke Kaiser led the Pioneers with 17 kills and just 3 hitting errors, while Kari Klaas had 10 kills, and Lindsey Block 9. All three hit .389 or better. Kristen Shields added 11 kills and a game-high 19 digs.

On the soccer fields, the Pointers scored three goals in each half to remain undefeated in league play at 8-0. The Pioneers fell to 1-15 overall, 1-6 in the WIAC.

Pioneers win triangular

The UW-Platteville volleyball team got back on the winning track with a pair of victories during Friday's home triangular.

The Pioneers blasted Viterbo 15-11, 15-4, 15-2 and beat Concordia (Wis.) 15-8, 14-16, 15-2, 15-8 to raise their overall record to 18-6.

UWP pitched nearly a perfect game against Concordia, holding the Falcons to .008 hitting. Concordia had 32 kills and 31 errors, while the Pioneers had 9 total blocks. Brooke Kaiser led the attack with 11 kills, while Erin Esser added 10. Kristen Shields had 6 of the team's 10 service aces.

The Pioneers made quick work of Viterbo, beating the V-Hawks in one hour. Lindsey Block and Kaiser each had 8 kills, and Kaiser added 5 block assists. Shields added 10 digs to the defensive effort.

UWP returns to action Wednesday at UW-Stevens Point, beginning at 7 p.m.

Titans sweep Pioneers

Visting UW-Oshkosh swept UW-Platteville in three volleyball games Wednesday, 15-7, 15-12, 15-11.

The Titans improved to 18-4 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 16-6.

Erin Esser, the lone senior on this year's UWP team, led the Pioneers with 10 kills, while Kristen Shields added 9 and Brooke Kaiser 8.

The Pioneers return to Williams Fieldhouse Friday for a triangular. They play Viterbo University at 4 p.m. and Concordia University at 8 p.m.

Pioneers break into WIAC win column

After suffering its second five-set conference loss in three nights on Friday, the UW-Platteville volleyball team rebounded to beat UW-Stout in three games Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers beat the host Blue Devils 15-9, 15-12, 15-8, earning their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win after three close losses. The Pioneers are now 16-5 overall. The Blue Devils fell to 17-7, 3-2.

The Pioneers recorded 9 aces Saturday, including 4 by Erin Esser and 2 ech by Kristen Shields and Brooke Kaiser. Shields, with 14 kills, and Kaiser, with 12, paced the offensive attack.

On Friday, UWP battled five games with 12th-ranked UW-River Falls before falling. The Falcons edged the Pioneers 8-15, 15-6, 25-4, 4-15, 15-10. Kaiser recorded 20 kills with just 3 errors and scored 3 aces. Esser and Shields each had 11 kills and combined for 66 digs. Megan Dankert added 47 setter assists.

Crowd leads NCAA Division III

The crowd for the UW-Whitewater at UW-Platteville volleyball match on Sept. 27 not only broke a Williams Fieldhouse record, but also is the largest for a NCAA Division III match this season.

The official attendance count was 933 for the Pioneers' Homecoming contest. No other Division III schools have had more than 500 fans, according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The 933 constitute the eighth-largest non-Division I crowd in the entire nation this season.

Pioneers can't get out of the blocks

UW-Platteville entered Wednesday's key Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at UW-La Crosse without injured hitter Lindsey Block, and as a result had trouble getting out of the blocks in a five-game loss.

The Eagles hit the Pioneers with a 14-0 haymaker to start the match. The Pioneers recovered slightly but still lost game one 15-6. UWP bounced back to take the second contest 15-10, and the two teams split the next games, with the Eagles winning 15-8 and the Pioneers winning 15-7, setting up a decisive fifth game.

The Pioneers took an early lead in the rally-scored contest, but the Eagles then ran away with a 15-4 game victory and overall match win.

UW-La Crosse improved to 10-8 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC. The Pioneers fell to 15-4, 0-2.

Brooke Kaiser led the Pioneers with 21 kills and 10 total blocks, including 3 solos. She fell one block short of the school record. Kari Klaas added 11 kills, and Jenny Bazala scored 10 starting in place of the injured Block. Kristen Shields made 22 digs, and Erin Esser and Megan Dankert each had 17. Dankert recorded 51 assists. Shirley Hunt's three aces led the team.

The Pioneers play at nationally ranked UW-River Falls Friday at 7 p.m. and at UW-Stout Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Pioneers cruise past Eagles

UW-Platteville ambushed Madison Edgewood 15-1 in the first game of Friday's volleyball match and went on to beat the Eagles in three straight games in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers won their Homecoming match 15-1, 15-11, 15-4, improving to 15-3 on the year.

Brooke Kaiser hit .647 on the night, making 12 kills and just one error in 17 attempts. Lindsey Block added 7 kills, and Kari Klass added 6 kills and 3 block assists. Setter Megan Dankert also had 3 blocks to go along with her 34 assists.

Record crowd sees UWP battle Warhawks

The largest volleyball crowd in UW-Platteville's Williams Fieldhouse history saw the Pioneers take second-ranked UW-Whitewater to four games before the Warhawks prevailed Wednesday.

A boisterous Homecoming crowd of 933 saw the Warhawks overcome a game UWP team 15-9, 15-7, 13-15, 15-7 and improve to 18-1 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fell to 14-3 and 0-1.

"I love a big crowd, and to me this was a big-time college atmosphere," Pioneer Coach Deb Schulman said. "Any time you can put a collegiate team in this type of atmosphere it's a positive. It's great for the student-athletes and great for the fans. It was exciting and fun to be a part of it."

Spurred on by the raucous crowd, the Pioneers bolted to an 8-4 lead in game one. The Warhawks, who were 49-6 in games coming into the match, rebounded to win the opener and then take the second game.

The Pioneers surged back in game three, scoring the first seven points and eventually becoming only the fourth team to win a game from UW-Whitewater this season.

Lindsey Block and Kristen Shields paced the offensive attack with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Brooke Kaiser's 18 digs were tops defensively.

"We played well in spurts," Schulman said. "Our weakness was our passing and serving, and that's an area they really excelled. That was the difference in the ballgame. I think we proved to ourselves we are capable of playing with them. We played with a lot of emotion, a lot of intensity. In the last couple of weeks, we had been missing that sometimes. If we can carry through our next practices and next couple of matches, this will be a real positive for us."

The Pioneers return to action Friday at Williams Fieldhouse against Edgewood at 7 p.m.

Pioneers win, set up showdown

UW-Platteville took three of four matches at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational this weekend, raising their record to 14-2 overall and setting up a showdown with powerhouse UW-Whitewater Wednesday.

The Pioneers play host to the Warhawks Wednesday at 7 p.m., and the match is part of the Homecoming Yell Contest. Fifteen student groups totalling more than 500 people are already registered to be in attendance to earn Homecoming points. With the Pioneer Pep Band scheduled to be there, and the magnitude of the match, the Williams Fieldhouse record of 652 is almost certain to fall.

The Pioneers fell once to host Illinois Wesleyan Friday by 10-15, 13-15, 5-15 scores, but came back to beat Aurora 15-3, 11-15, 15-4, 15-1 Friday. On Saturday, the Pioneers defeated North Central 10-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-4 and Capital, Ohio, 15-7, 12-15, 15-10, 15-3.

One of the keys to the weekend was offensive balance, as UWP had at least two players in double figures in kills in every match. Lindsey Block scored a season-high 22 kills against North Central, Kristen Shields, Brooke Kaiser and Kari Klaas each 10 or more kills during the tournament, while Erin Essser had 51 digs in the four matches, including 18 vs. North Central. Megan Dankert totalled 52 assists in the North Central match, equalling her career high.

21st-ranked Pioneers win in 3

UW-Platteville, which earlier Wednesday was voted the 21st-ranked team in NCAA Divisiuon III, beat host Beloit College 15-3, 15-6, 15-11, improving their record to 11-1, the second best start in school history.

The Pioneers held the Buccaneers to just .077 hitting while recording six team blocks. Kristen Shields paced the offense with 10 kills, while Lindsey Block had 9, and Brooke Kaiser and Kari Klaas each had six. Kaiser added three service aces, while Megan Dankert scored 2 aces to go along with her 36 assists. All 12 playeers who made the trip played in at least one game.

Laura Smith led Beloit (3-10) with 7 kills.

Pioneers roll in Los Angeles

Playing some of its best volleyball, UW-Platteville rolled over host Pomona-Pitzer Saturday 15-2, 15-9, 15-9 to complete its California trip with a 3-1 record.

Earlier in the morning, the Pioneers routed Redlands, Calif., 15-8, 15-4, 15-6.

The Pioneers hit .412 as a team against the host Sagehens, with middle hitters Kari Klaas and Brooke Kaiser combining for 18 kills, 7 blocks and only one hitting error. Kristen Shields led the team with 10 kills, while Lindsey Block, Kaiser and Klaas each had 9 and Erin Esser added 8. Megan Dankert had 38 assists.

UW-Platteville is now 10-1 on the season. The Pioneers will play at Beloit College on Wednesday and at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational next weekend.

Pioneers split in Los Angeles

The UW-Platteville volleyball team lost its first match of the year in five games to Schreiner (Tenn.), but bounced back to beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first round of the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Los Angeles Friday.

Schreiner, who was 2-0 on the day, beat the Pioneers 15-10, 9-15, 15-11, 10-15, 15-11. Brooke Kaiser had 16 kills, Lindsey Block 13 and Kristen Shields 12 for the Pioneers. Sheilds added 19 digs, and Erin Esser had 18.

UWP came back strong to beat the California school, 15-6, 13-15, 15-9, 15-12. Block's 15 kills paced the offensive attack, while Kaiser added 13. Esser had 17 digs, while Shields had 13, Kari Klaas 10 and Kaiser 10. Megan Dankert totalled 99 assists over the two matches.

The Pioneers, now 8-1, face Redlands (Calif.) and the host Sagehens Saturday before flying home.

A Kaiser Roll

Junior leads Pioneers to title

Junior middle hitter Brooke Kaiser, who transferred to UW-Platteville after starting for two years at Southeast Lousiana University, led the Pioneers to a sweep in the 12th annual UW-Platteville Volleyball Invitational Saturday.

Kaiser set a school record with 14 kills in 16 attempts with no errors, as the Pioneers routed Ripon 15-6, 15-8, 15-6 in Saturday's first game. In the title game, the Pioneers beat UW-La Crosse, ranked 20th in NCAA III, 15-6, 15-13, 15-4.

The Pioneers improved to 7-0 with their impressive weekend. They are 21-2 in games played this season.

Kaiser was joined on the all-tournament team by Lindsey Block, who had 10 kills vs. Ripon and 9 vs. UW-La Crosse, and Erin Esser, who totalled 12 kills and just 2 errors on the day. Kaiser led the attack against UWL with 13 kills in 22 attempts.

Pioneers win two

The host Pioneers routed both Edgewood and Dubuque during the first day of the 12th annual UW-Platteville Volleyball Invitational.

The Pioneers pounded Edgewood 15-4, 15-1, 15-8 and Dubuque 15-5, 15-6 15-5, upping their record to 5-0 overall.

UW-La Crosse was the only other school to post two wins Friday. The Pioneers will play Ripon Saturday at 10 a.m., then conclude the six-team tournament by facing UW-La Crosse at 2 p.m.

UWP held Edgewood to a .000 hitting percentage (19 kills and 19 errors). Kari Klaas and Brooke Kaiser each had 6 kills, while Lindsey Block and Kristen Shields had 5 each. All 13 players in uniform played in at least one game of the opening match.

The solid defense continued against Dubuque, which was ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III pre-season poll. The Spartans managed just a .011 hitting percentage, while the Pioneers hit at .289. Sheilds and Block led the offense with 10 and 8 kills, respectively, while Erin Esser had 9 digs, and Kaiser recorded 6 blocks. Megan Dankert totalled 43 assists in the two matches.

Pioneers win third straight

UW-Platteville won its third straight volleyball match Tuesday, winning at St. Ambrose University in four games.

The Pioneers prevailed 15-9, 13-15, 15-11, 15-13, raising their record to 3-0 on the year. Brooke Kaiser led the team with 18 kills and 6 blocks, while Kristen Shields had 17 kills and Lindsey Block made 15.

The Fighting Bees fell to 1-3 on the season.

Pioneers win two in Iowa

UW-Platteville opened its 2000 volleyball season with a pair of victories at the Wartburg Quad Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers beat Loras 15-7, 15-11, 15-17, 15-6 then swept Luther in three straight games.

Kristen Shields had a great day hitting at the net, recording 41 kills with just 8 errors in 82 attempts. Brooke Kaiser, playing her first UWP matches after starting two years at NCAA Division I school Southeastern Louisiana University, had 11 total blocks on the day and 21 kills. Kari Klaas added 26 kills and, and Lindsey Block had 22.

The Pioneers are at St. Ambrose Tuesday, then play host to the 12th annual UW-Platteville Invitational Friday and Saturday. Play begins Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
