Pioneers Pick Up Conference Sweep Against Eagles
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team picked up its second sweep this week against UW-La Crosse on Friday night at Williams Fieldhouse. The Pioneers (21-4, 3-2 WIAC) defeated the Eagles (6-17, 0-4 WIAC) 25-14, 25-16, and 25-19.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team picked up its second sweep this week against UW-La Crosse on Friday night at Williams Fieldhouse. The Pioneers (21-4, 3-2 WIAC) defeated the Eagles (6-17, 0-4 WIAC) 25-14, 25-16, and 25-19.
Prior to the match, the team recognized the team's lone senior Emma Carlson with a senior night salute.
The Pioneers hit .348 while keeping the UW-La Crosse to .183.
Carlson paced the Pioneers with 15 kills while sophomore Kennedy Wenger totaled 11 and junior Kierney McDonald added 10 to all finish in double-digit kills.
Junior Gracie Gibbens finished with 36 assists across the three sets and junior Bri Gartner notched a game-high 11 digs.
In the first set, it didn't take long for the Pioneers to jump out to a 10-4 lead. They strung together 4-0, 3-0, and another 4-0 runs to extend the lead to 21-11. A kill by Wenger took the team to set point and an attacking error by the Eagles closed the set.
The teams traded points back and forth in the second set until an 11-1 run featuring three-straight kills by McDonald gave the Pioneers a 17-7 advantage. UW-La Crosse answered with a 6-1 run of their own, but the Pioneers picked up the pace and a kill by Wenger followed by back-to-back service aces by Carlson captured the 25-16 victory.
UW-Platteville used another strong start kick off the final set as the team jumped out to an 11-3 lead. The Eagles strung together a 5-1 run, but Carlson and McDonald teamed up for back-to-back kills to cool UW-La Crosse's momentum. Wenger and junior Nicole Totzke finished off the match with a block assist to close out the 25-19 win and sweep.
The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to No. 5 UW-Whitewater on Wednesday, October 30 for a 7 p.m. match.
