Pioneers Split Two Matches At Bishop Invitational
DELAWARE, Ohio – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (10-1) split two matches on the final day of the Bishop Invitational on Saturday morning. The Pioneers swept Ohio Wesleyan (6-4) in the first game before falling 3-0 to Case Western Reserve (11-0) in the second match from Branch Rickey Arena in Delaware, Ohio.

DELAWARE, Ohio – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (10-1) split two matches on the final day of the Bishop Invitational on Saturday morning. The Pioneers swept Ohio Wesleyan (6-4) in the first game before falling 3-0 to Case Western Reserve (11-0) in the second match from Branch Rickey Arena in Delaware, Ohio.
Match One Highlights
The Pioneers took the first set against Ohio Wesleyan by a score of 25-11. UW-Platteville took control of the first set by starting out with a 9-2 advantage, and the lead grew to double-digits at 16-6 to force a Bishops timeout. UW-Platteville got off to a similar start in the second set and led by as many as eight in the 25-18 win.
Ohio Wesleyan trailed to begin the third set but flipped the score in its favor with a six-point run. The Pioneers kept the set close and later tied it at 20 apiece. UW-Platteville was able to wrap up the sweep by a score of 27-25 after kills by junior Kierney McDonald and senior Emma Carlson helped put the match away.
McDonald recorded a match-high 15 kills, while Carlson added 12 as the only two Pioneers to reach double digits kills. As a team, UW-Platteville finished with 44 kills and a .265 hitting percentage, including an impressive mark of .636 by McDonald.
Junior Gracie Gibbens led the team with 31 assists and was second with 10 digs. Junior Bri Gartner paced the Pioneers with 11 digs.
Match Two Highlights
Case Western Reserve scored the first seven points in set one and later claimed the opening set behind a score of 25-10. The Spartans carried that momentum into a seven-point lead early in set two, but the Pioneers were able to get back within three at 20-17. The set still went the way of Case Western Reserve by a score of 25-20. UW-Platteville trailed by one at 11-10 in the early stages of set three, but the Spartans picked up the sweep by winning 25-18.
Carlson was the lone Pioneer to reach double figures in kills with 11. UW-Platteville finished with 31 kills as a team in the loss, while posting a hitting percentage of -.008.
Gibbens led the team with 22 assists, while junior Kelsey Ewert had a team-high 11 digs.
Up Next
The Pioneers begin WIAC competition next Friday on the road against UW-Stout. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
