CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – In an early season matchup of undefeated teams, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (5-0) handed Grinnell (5-1) its first loss of the season behind a 3-0 sweep on Friday afternoon inside Kohawk Arena on day one of the Coe College Tournament.
A pair of five-point runs helped UW-Platteville take the opening set by a score of 25-16. Freshman Brooklyn Radecke had six of the team's 17 kills in the first set, as UW-Platteville posted a hitting percentage of .333 across 36 attacks.
Grinnell kept things closer early in set two until a 10-2 run in favor of UW-Platteville swung the momentum. Junior Nicole Totzke capped off the 25-15 second set victory with her first kill of the match.
UW-Platteville took an early seven-point lead in the third set, but Grinnell answered with a four-point swing to get back within three. UW-Platteville's offensive attack behind Radecke, junior Kierney McDonald, and senior Emma Carlson proved too much however, and the Pioneers recorded a fifth consecutive sweep with a 25-20 set three win.
Radecke paced the team with a career-high 18 kills while hitting an incredible mark of .517. Carlson (11) and McDonald (10) joined the freshman with double-digit kills. UW-Platteville totaled 49 kills as a team in the win and matched a season-high hitting percentage at .323.
Junior Gracie Gibbens had a team-high 35 assists while junior Bri Gartner led the way with 14 digs. UW-Platteville had nine service aces in the win, with Carlson and sophomore Grace Betke each tallying three.
