Pioneers Drop Five Set Match to Coe

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (18-5) fell in five sets Tuesday night to Coe College (12-10) in Williams Fieldhouse.
Tied 24-24 in the opening set, the teams went on to exchange points until the Pioneers pulled ahead with a kill by senior Claudia Johnson. A Coe attacking error secured the 31-29 win for the Pioneers. The Kohawks bounced back, winning the next two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-15 for a 2-1 match lead. UW-Platteville answered with a 25-17 win in the fourth to send the match to a fifth set. Behind a kill by Johnson and back-to-back kills by junior Emma Carlson, the Pioneers attempted to rally from a 14-7 deficit, but an attacking error concluded the match and the Kohawks 15-10 victory.
Carlson tallied a match-high 22 kills while sophomore Kierney McDonald added 13 of her own and posted a .476 hitting percentage. Senior Shea Lauria finished with a match-high 21 digs. Senior Sam Rossetti paced the Pioneers with 31 assists and sophomore Gracie Gibbens added 23.
As a team the Pioneers totaled six blocks with Johnson assisting on four of the six. The Kohawks totaled 10 blocks in the match.
UW-Platteville returns to action on Friday, October 20 when they travel to UW-Stevens Point for a conference match at 7 p.m.
