Pioneers pick up pair of wins at St. Norbert Invite
DE PERE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team picked up a pair of wins Saturday at the St. Norbert Chick-fil-A Invitational to collect its fifth and sixth consecutive victories. Inside the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center, the Pioneers (6-1 overall) swept Dominican 3-0 before defeating host St. Norbert 3-1.

DE PERE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team picked up a pair of wins Saturday at the St. Norbert Chick-fil-A Invitational and collected its fifth and sixth consecutive victories. Inside the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center, the Pioneers (6-1 overall) swept Dominican 3-0 before defeating host St. Norbert 3-1.
UW-Platteville was the only team to finish 3-0 ahead of St. Norbert, Bethel, Carroll, Illinois Institute of Technology and Dominican. Senior Sam Rossetti and junior Madelyn Cooley were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The opening set against Dominican (3-4 overall) went the way of the Pioneers by a dominant score of 25-13. UW-Platteville stretched its win margin in the second set by win of 25-12 and finished the sweep with a 25-15 victory in the third set.
Junior Emma Carlson registered a match-high 11 kills, while senior Claudia Johnson added nine of her own while posting a .615 hitting percentage. Sophomore Bri Gartner finished with a match-high 13 digs while senior Sam Rossetti finished with 34 assists.
Against St. Norbert (4-4 overall), the Pioneers pulled ahead early in the first set and never looked back, defeating the Green Knights 25-18. St. Norbert responded in the second set swapping the lead multiple times, but a pair of kills by Johnson tied the game and gave the Pioneers the lead. Carlson struck with a service ace and senior Camryn Johnston with the set-point kill gave UW-Platteville a 2-0 lead. The Green Nights bounced back, winning the third set 25-17 and forced a fourth set. The final set kept fans on the edge of their seats as the teams kept it a one-point set for majority of the time. Tied at 17, Cooley tailed three straight kills to give the Pioneers a 19-17 lead and Johnson added two of her own after including the final kill of the match.
Johnson had a team-high 19 kills, .441 hitting percentage. Rossetti totaled 43 assists, six kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Kelsey Ewert dished out four service aces.
The Pioneers will return to action on Tuesday, September 12 when they travel to the University of Dubuque for a 7:30 p.m. match.
