Pioneers Sweep Wartburg Saturday
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (2-1) picked up its first sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon against Wartbug (1-3) inside the El Pomar Sports Center on the grounds of Colorado College.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (2-1) picked up its first sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon against Wartbug (1-3) inside the El Pomar Sports Center on the grounds of Colorado College.
The Pioneers led throughout the opening set, at one point holding a 14-4 advantage en route to a 25-17 set one win. The two teams traded points for much of the second set, and the score sat even at 16 until a 4-1 UW-Platteville run put the Pioneers ahead for good. Junior Emma Carlson and senior Claudia Johnson tallied a trio of kills to help secure a 25-21 set two win for UW-Platteville. In the third set, Wartburg hung close after trailing early, but Carlson and Johnson scored the final five Pioneers points to earn the sweep with a 25-22 victory.
Carlson recorded the double-double with a match-high 17 kills to go along with 11 digs. The Dixon, Illinois native posted an impressive .484 hitting percentage on 31 total attacks in the match.
Johnson finished second on the team with nine kills on a .313 hitting percentage while junior Madelyn Cooley totaled seven kills of her own as well as three block assists.
Sophomore Bri Gartner led the team with 17 digs. Senior Sam Rossetti finished with 24 assists while sophomore Gracie Gibbens added 18 assists.
The Pioneers visit Loras on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
