Pioneers Drop First Match of Season to Blugolds
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (9-1, 0-1 WIAC) dropped its first match of the season on Wednesday evening, falling to UW-Eau Claire (5-3, 1-0 WIAC) 3-1 at home.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team (9-1, 0-1 WIAC) dropped its first match of the season on Wednesday evening, falling to UW-Eau Claire (5-3, 1-0 WIAC) 3-1 at home.
UW-Eau Claire opened a five-point lead in the early stages of the first set before a 9-2 UW-Platteville run gave the hosts a three-point advantage at 19-16 and forced a Blugolds timeout. Late in the set, UW-Eau Claire held a 24-23 lead, but the Pioneers scored the final three points, led by a pair of kills from junior Camryn Johnston to take the first set by a score of 26-24.
In the second set, the Blugolds took an early lead, but the Pioneers responded with another 9-2 run to take a five-point advantage at 21-16. But UW-Eau Claire answered with nine straight points to win the set 25-21. The Blugolds found their rhythm in the third set, taking an early lead and winning 25-15.
UW-Eau Claire held the advantage throughout the fourth set with UW-Platteville getting as close as three. But the Blugolds pulled away, ultimately winning the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
Sophomore Emma Carlson posted a team-high 13 kills on a .146 hitting percentage and added 14 digs for the double-double. Junior Camryn Johnston and freshman Kierney McDonald each tallied nine. Freshman Bri Gartner led the team with 17 digs and senior Sam Rossetti finished with 27 assists.
The Pioneers travel to Aurora University on Friday and will play three matches over the course of the weekend. The team will face Millikin on Friday at 5 p.m. before playing Aurora (11 a.m.) and Rose-Hulman (1 p.m.) on Saturday.
