Pioneer Volleyball splits on last day of UW-Platteville Tourney
After being swept by UW-River Falls a week ago, the UW-Platteville beat the Falcons 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-15, 26-24) on Saturday, and then wrapped up the UW-Platteville Tournament with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-19) setback to 23rd-ranked Carthage at the Williams Fieldhouse.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- After being swept by UW-River Falls a week ago, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville beat the Falcons 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-15, 26-24) on Saturday, and then wrapped up the UW-Platteville Tournament with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-19) setback to 23rd-ranked Carthage at the Williams Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers rebounded from a 4-0 hole to take a commanding 18-10 lead. Freshman Allison Jensen and junior Jennifer Schmidt each recorded three kills, giving the Pioneers a 25-17 opening set win.
The Falcons took an 18-13 lead in the second set. The Pioneers managed to tie it up at 22-22, but UWRF squeaked by to take the set 25-23.
The Pioneers scored the first eight points of the third set and cruised to a 25-15 victory.
UW-River Falls lead for nearly the whole fourth set and took a 22-13 lead. The Pioneers went on to win three of the next four points, 23-17, forcing UWRF to take a timeout. The Falcons had match point, 24-18, but the Pioneers rallied, scoring the six consecutive points, and took the match 26-24.
Jensen ended the game with a team-high nine kills, while Schmidt and freshman Merritt Johnson each tallied six kills. Senior LeeAnn Mizgalski recorded seven kills and a team-best 12 digs. Sophomore Lidia Frias accounted for 10 of the Pioneers 28 blocks, as UW-Platteville out blocked UWRF 28-14.
The Pioneers' hitting struggled against the nationally ranked Lady Reds with a -.024 hitting percentage. Carthage posted hitting percentages over .475 in the first two sets and ended the day with a .325 percentage. UW-Platteville out blocked the Lady Reds 10-6 with Jensen leading the way with four.
Carthage never trailed in the three sets and only allowed the Pioneers to tie once in each set. The Lady Reds closed out the first set with a 7-2 run, winning 25-12, and then second set with a 10-4 run, 25-16. The Pioneer trailed 24-14 in the last set, but the hole was to deep to complete the comeback, falling 25-19.
UW-Platteville welcomes Carroll University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the Pioneers annual Yell Night.
