PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team's home opener on Wednesday wasn't as welcoming as the Pioneers would have liked, falling to UW-Whitewater, 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 22-15, 25-19), in Williams Fieldhouse.
Freshman Allison Jensen led the Pioneers with 14 kills and also tallied three blocks. Junior Lauren Grady recorded 11 kills with a stellar .435 hitting percentage, while sophomore Lidia Frias registered 10 kills.
The Pioneers held their own at the net with 14 blocks to UWW's 9. UW-Platteville's 14 service errors washed out the solid play at the net.
Five service errors in the first set crippled the Pioneers from making any run, as the Warhawks took the set, 25-18.
UWW jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the second set, forcing the Pioneers to take a timeout. UW-Platteville couldn't manage to put together a long enough run, dropping the second set 25-19.
A big kill by Grady tied the third set 9-9, and then a Warhawk error gave the Pioneers a 10-9 lead. Out of a Whitewater timeout, the Pioneers went on a 8-4 run to take their biggest lead of the set, 18-13. UWW managed to cut its deficit to one, 22-21, but a huge kill by Jensen and Frias pushed UW-Platteville's lead to 24-21. An UWW service error ended the set, giving the Pioneers the 25-22 victory.
UW-Platteville kept its momentum going early in the fourth set, taking a 10-7 lead. But after a UWW timeout, the Warhawks came out and rattled off four straight points, 12-10, forcing the Pioneers to take a timeout. After giving up the lead the Pioneers couldn't seem to put enough points together, falling 25-19.
UW-Platteville continues WIAC play with a trip to UW-Stout on Friday and to UW-River Falls on Saturday.
