Volleyball nipped by No. 23 Pointers
The UW-Platteville volleyball team fell to 23rd-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23), on Wednesday at the Williams Fieldhouse.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team fell to 23rd-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23), on Wednesday at the Williams Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers drop to 11-15 and 1-4 in league play, while the Pointers move to 20-4 and 5-1 in WIAC action.
UWSP jumped out to a 10-3 lead and the Pioneers couldn't get any closer than three points as UW-Stevens Point won the first set 25-17.
With a couple of Pioneer attack errors to allow UWSP to tie the second set up at 12-12, the Pioneers used a 13-4 run, tying the game up at one set apiece, 25-16.
The third set was played evenly early until the Pointers scored four consecutive points, taking a 15-11 lead. The Pioneers couldn't make a run of their own and fell 25-17.
Five Pointer attack errors helped give the Pioneers a 8-1 lead in the fourth-set. After a UWSP timeout, the Pointers went on a 10-3 run to tie the set up at 11-11. Both teams then went back and fourth until, UWSP got the edge on a service ace to go up 21-20. The Pioneers couldn't score two straight points as UWSP squeaked out a 25-23 victory.
Senior Stephanie Kirchner led the Pioneers with 13 kills and added three block assists and four digs. Freshman Lidia Frias and sophomore Jennifer Schmidt each recorded 12 kills, while freshman Amber Williams contributed nine kills of her own.
UWSP's Emma Brunkhorst recorded a game-high 15 kills.
The Pioneers welcome Dubuque and Simpson on Friday. UW-Platteville will square off with UD at 5 p.m. and then Simpson at 7 p.m.
