Volleyball split at first day of Carthage Invite
The UW-Platteville volleyball team split its first two games at the Carthage Invitational, coming back to beat Illinois Wesleyan, 3-2, in five sets then falling to third-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.), 3-1, on Friday.
KENOSHA, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team split its first two games at the Carthage Invitational, coming back to beat Illinois Wesleyan, 3-2, in five sets then falling to third-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.), 3-1, on Friday.
UW-Platteville took the first set 25-17 then dropped the next two sets, 25-14, 25-16, before coming back to win 25-22 and 19-17 in the fifth. Junior LeeAnn Mizgalski and Jennifer Schmidt led UW-Platteville with 16 kills apiece. Senior Stephanie Kirchner tallied 11 kills, and sophomore Katie O'Malley totaled 30 assists.
In the Pioneers' nightcap, UW-Platteville couldn't keep up with the third-ranked Tommies falling 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 25-15. St. Thomas recorded 51 kills with 18 errors to the Pioneers 43 kills and 25 errors. UW-Platteville's Mizgalski led the team with 12 kills, while sophomore Schmidt registered 10 kills. The Pioneers split time at the setter position with O'Malley registering 19 assists and senior Allee Yundt with 16. Freshman Lindsey Decker led UW-Platteville's defense recording 20 of the Pioneers 57 digs.
The Pioneers wrap up their weekend at the Carthage Invitational squaring off with Dominican (Ill.) at 10 a.m. then host Carthage at 2 p.m.
