UW-Platteville Splits its Two Matches on Final Day of NYU Tournament

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team wrapped up its trip to New York on Saturday, with a 25-22, 25-15, 25-22 loss to New Paltz State and a five-set, 23-25, 25-12, 25-20, 19-25, 16-14 win over host New York University.

The Pioneers (3-1) dropped its first match of the day to New Paltz State being outhit by a .228 to .084 margin. In the loss, Danielle Cushley led the attack with nine kills for UW-Platteville.

New Paltz State controlled the match with Liz Hauser having a match-high 10 kills in the win. In the win, the all-around game of Becca Borquist played a key role with an eight kill, five service aces and nine dig efforts.

In the nightcap and final match of the two-day tournament, the Pioneers won its first five-set match of the season.

Stephanie Kirchner, Rachel Oldenburg and Danielle Cushley were able to record double-digit kills in the win. Kirchner led the attack with 15 kills en route to a .483 hitting percentage en route to her first double double of the season as she also had 12 digs.

Setter Katie O'Malley posted her collegiate double double with a 28 assist, 10 dig effort.  Also a key factor in the win for the Pioneers was the service game as they had 11 service aces including five from Allee Yundt.

Next up UW-Platteville will host its first of two tournaments, starting on Friday, Sept. 7 when they will host Loras at 4 p.m. and Simpson at 8 p.m. inside Williams Fieldhouse. On day two, Saturday, Sept. 8, the Pioneers will host Ripon at 10 a.m. and St. Norbert at 2 p.m.
