Pioneers sweep own tournament
The host Pioneers swept four matches--losing only two sets along the way--to claim the UW-Platteville Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The only undefeated team in the six-school tournament, UW-Platteville beat Dominican, 25-21, 25-9, 25-18 and St. Norbert, 21-25, 25-18, 25-9, 25-13 Friday, then took care of Edgewood 25-21, 25-14, 25-16 and Augustana 25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19 Saturday.
Coach Deb Schulman's club improved to 11-2 on the season with the four wins.
Senior Melissa Hillebrand and freshman Emily Kaiser were named to the six-player all-tournament team. Hillebrand racked up a team-high 47 kills, reaching double figures in three of the four matches, while Emily Kaiser hit a sizzling .407 with 33 kills and 13 blocks.
Briana Kaiser added 35 kills, Stephanie Kirschner 29 and Melanie Bailiff 23. Ali Sikic averaged 11.5 assists per set and served up 10 aces. Abby Carey made 49 digs, and Leslie White had 31 digs and 9 aces.
The Pioneers play host to Beloit Tuesday at 7 p.m.
