Pioneers top Eagles in WIAC opener

UW-Platteville made a successful 2010 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference debut, defeating host UW-La Crosse Wednesday night.

After dropping the first set 20-25, the Pioneers swept the next three, 30-28, 25-15, 25-14. UW-Platteville bolted to leads of 6-0 and 16-2 in the final set to put the match away.

Coach Deb Schulman's team rang up 62 kills to the Eagles' 34. Melissa Hillebrand led the way with 16 kills, while Melanie Bailiff had 13, and Briana Kaiser and Stephanie Kirchner each had 12. Alexendra Bresser led the Eagles with eight.

Ali Sikic had 50 assists for the Pioneers, while Abby Carey and Leslie White each made 14 digs. Carey served up four of the Pioneers' nine aces.

UW-Platteville is now 5-1 overall, and UW-La Crosse is 6-3.

The Pioneers continue WIAC road competition this weekend, playing at UW-River Falls Friday and UW-Stout Saturday.
