PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team had a lot to celebrate on Saturday as they shut out UW-Stout 4-0 while also recognizing its senior class of nine team members at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers (11-2-3, 2-0-2 WIAC) controlled the night as they amassed 24 shots compared to the Blue Devils (0-10-2, 0-4-0 WIAC) six shots. UW-Platteville totaled nine shots on goal to UW-Stout's two. Sophomore Jess Morawski had a game-high four shots, including one goal while senior Alyssa Peterson scored two goals on three shots.
Fittingly, a duo of seniors got the Pioneers on the board 25 minutes into the game when Arianna Lombardi found the net with an assist from Lydia Smith. In the 33rd minute, freshman Jorie Carr set one up for Morawski to send a shot between a defender and the keeper into the lower left corner of the net.
Leading 2-0 at the half, the Pioneers struck again just 43 seconds into the second half as Peterson fired a deep shot into the upper left side with an assist from Morawski. Smith and Morawski assisted Peterson's second goal of the half and the Pioneers went ahead 4-0 with eight minutes to play off a corner kick.
Sophomore Madison Way and senior Juliana Penniston each registered one save while in goal.
After the victory, the team celebrated seniors Penniston, Lauren Lodico, Peterson, Smith, Samantha Yexley, Anna Spindle, Ellie Maaske, Lombardi, and Bryanne Pinkowski.
The Pioneers will return to action on Wednesday, October 23 when they hit the road to UW-Whitewater for a 7 p.m. game.
*As with every UW-Platteville win this year, the Platteville A&W will be offering a $3 Pioneer burger the day after the win and the Platteville Taco John's will be offering 10 tacos for $10 the day after each Pioneer win.
