Pioneers suffer first loss of season at UC Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (9-1-1) fell 2-1 while on the road at the University of California Santa Cruz (4-2-3).
Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Way stayed busy in the match, recording a career-high 16 saves, to keep it a one-point contest as UC Santa Cruz outshot the Pioneers 25-4.
After a scoreless first half, a goal by Sydney Boyd, assisted by Camile Anneet in the 50th minute gave the Banana Slugs their first lead of the day.
Senior Arianna Lombardi tied the game less than two minutes later on an unassisted goal, but UC Santa Cruz took the lead for the final time of the day with a goal by Emily De Los Santos in the 77th minute.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, October 2 when they travel to the University of Dubuque for a 7 p.m. game.
