SUPERIOR, Wis. – Two second half goals sent the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (4-0-0) to a 2-1 road win over UW-Superior (2-2-0) on Saturday afternoon from NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior, Wisconsin.
The Yellowjackets broke through for the first goal of the game in the 24th minute of the opening half. The score remained 1-0 in favor of UW-Superior for the rest of the half, but the Pioneers finished with a 5-4 advantage in total shots.
Exactly eight minutes into the second half, the Pioneers tied the game at one on sophomore Jess Morawski's sixth goal of the season. The goal came on a perfect corner kick by senior Arianna Lombardi, and Morawski was able to head the ball into the back of the net.
In the 65th minute, senior Lydia Smith scored what would later be the game-winning goal for the Pioneers. Lombardi was credited with her second assist of the game after her pass allowed Smith to have a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper. Smith's shot beat the Yellowjackets last line of defense to the right for the goal.
UW-Platteville outshot UW-Superior 14-8 for the game, including 7-5 in shots on goal. Smith and Lombardi paced the team with four shots, while Morawski added three.
Sophomore Madison Way earned another win in net while stopping four of five shots she faced.
The Pioneers return home for a 5 p.m. contest against Concordia Wisconsin on Wednesday evening.
