DULUTH, Minn. – Three first half goals allowed the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (3-0-0) to coast to a 4-0 shutout win over St. Scholastica (0-4-0) on Friday afternoon from Kenny Harkins Field in Duluth, Minnesota.
Senior Alyssa Peterson scored the Pioneers first goal of the game in the 17th minute off a corner kick. Senior Samantha Yexley put the ball into the box from the corner and senior Anna Spindle put it in front of the net with a headed pass. Peterson finished the pass to put UW-Platteville in front.
In the 32nd minute, freshman Jorie Carr scored her first career goal with a long shot from about 30 yards out. The arching shot found the upper left corner of the goal as the Saints keeper tried to get back into position.
Just a couple minutes later, senior Arianna Lombardi made it 3-0 Pioneers after a free kick from sophomore Jess Morawski allowed Lombardi to go one on one against the keeper.
Morawski scored UW-Platteville's final goal in the 46th minute of the second half. Senior Lydia Smith was credited with the assist on the play.
The Pioneers controlled the ball for much of the match and finished with a 34-4 advantage in total shots. Seventeen of those shots finished on frame, and UW-Platteville's defense kept St. Scholastica from getting any shots on goal. Lombardi (10), Morawski (7), and Smith (6) paced the team in shots.
Sophomore Madison Way collected the win in goal. She played 63 minutes in net before giving way to freshman Leah Sprangers for the remainder of the game.
UW-Platteville wraps up the weekend road trip by taking on UW-Superior tomorrow at 2 p.m.
