Pioneers Open Season With Shutout Of Concordia Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s soccer team (1-0-0) started the 2023 season strong with a 3-0 win over Concordia Chicago (0-1-0) on Friday afternoon at Concordia Stadium in River Forest, Illinois.

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (1-0-0) started the 2023 season strong with a 3-0 win over Concordia Chicago (0-1-0) on Friday afternoon at Concordia Stadium in River Forest, Illinois.

Junior Arianna Lombardi supplied the offense in her Pioneers debut, as she tallied all three goals. The Bourbonnais, Illinois native opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and added two more goals in the second half (58th and 86th minutes) for the hat trick.

Junior Lydia Smith was credited with the lone assist in the game on Lombardi's second goal of the game.

UW-Platteville outshot Concordia Chicago 33-4, including 15-3 in shots on goal. Lombardi finished with a team-high eight shots and four on target, while Smith added six and junior Alyssa Peterson, freshman Sarah Liljestrand, and freshman Sophie Carlos each recorded four.

In goal, freshman Madison Way collected her first win while making a trio of saves.

Head coach Eliza Denmeade earned her first win as coach of the Pioneers.

For Concordia Chicago, Auloni Burnell stopped 12 of the 15 shots she faced in goal. Four different Cougars recorded a shot in the match.

UW-Platteville will play its home opener on Sunday, September 3 at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium against Concordia Moorhead. The Pioneers and Cobbers are set to begin at 10 a.m.
