Pioneers Open Conference Play With Win Over UW-Stout
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Behind a strong performance from sophomore Lydia Smith, which included the game-winning goal, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s soccer team (8-2-1, 1-0 WIAC) won the opening game of its WIAC schedule on Saturday, defeating the UW-Stout Blue Devils 4-3 (1-8-2, 0-1 WIAC).
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Behind a strong performance from sophomore Lydia Smith, which included the game-winning goal, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team (8-2-1, 1-0 WIAC) won the opening game of its WIAC schedule on Saturday, defeating the UW-Stout Blue Devils 4-3 (1-8-2, 0-1 WIAC).
Freshman Jenna Gravitt scored just a minute into the game to give the Pioneers an early lead. Smith was credited with the assist following a long corner kick to the far post. Sophomore Anna Spindle added to the UW-Platteville lead in the 22nd minute, scoring her third of the season coming off an assist by Smith.
UW-Stout got on the board in the 25th minute, following a strong shot. Freshman Katherine Ohlwein countered with the third Pioneers goal in the 27th minute. Smith placed a perfect pass to the far post that Ohlwein tucked into the corner past the keeper.
The Blue Devils would tie the match at three heading into halftime with goals in the 35th and 45th minute.
Smith continued her impressive game by scoring the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute after stealing a loose ball and firing a shot to the corner for her fourth goal of the season. UW-Stout had two more shots in the remainder of the match, but the Pioneers kept the Blue Devils from scoring.
Smith scored the game-winning goal and assisted on the other three Pioneer scores. The team posted 17 shots, including eight on goal, with Smith posting a team-high five assists while Spindle added three. Senior Emma Ball recorded the win in goal, picking up a save to improve to 8-2-1 on the season.
The Pioneers continue WIAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when they travel to UW-Whitewater for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
