Early goals propel Pioneers past Cornell
MT. VERNON, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team scored four goals within the first 20 minutes of play to defeat Cornell College 5-0 Thursday afternoon.

MT. VERNON, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team scored four goals within the first 20 minutes of play to defeat Cornell College 5-0 Thursday afternoon.
Lydia Smith led the charge early and scored the first goal of the game 25 seconds into play. Smith fired off a second shot high into the left side to take a 2-0 lead just six minutes later.
Teammate Alyssa Peterson added another goal in the 11th minute with a shot high into the center off a corner kick by Jenna Gravitt. The Pioneers' offense refused to slow down and Katherine Ohlwein took the score to 4-0 16 minutes into the game off a pass from Peterson.
The score held until the 85th minute where Bella De La Cruz scored her first goal of the season to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Pioneers (6-1-1) led shots 20-7 with eight on goal to the Rams' (1-7-1) five. Emma Ball tallied five stopped shots.
The Pioneers will return to action this weekend when they travel to Central College on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.
