Pioneers Open Season With Road Win Over Eagles
VERONA, Wis. – Behind a pair of first half goals, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s soccer team defeated the Edgewood Eagles 3-1 in the season opener Thursday afternoon at Reddan Park.

VERONA, Wis. – Behind a pair of first half goals, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team defeated the Edgewood Eagles 3-1 in the season opener Thursday afternoon at Reddan Park.
Senior Emma Willard opened the scoring for the Pioneers in the 14th minute on a free kick just outside the box. A minute later, sophomore Lauren Lodico found the back of the net after a corner kick from freshman Jenna Gravitt made its way to her right foot on the far post.
Sophomore Lydia Smith added a second half goal for UW-Platteville in the 62nd minute as she beat the keeper to the left side following a pass from Willard.
Edgewood got on the board in the 71st minute, scoring on ball that was loose in the box. The Eagles attempting six shots in the closing minutes including two on target, but both were fended off by senior Emma Ball for the Pioneers.
The Eagles held the advantage in shots at 16-5 overall and 8-4 in shots on goal. Ball had a strong season debut in goal, stopping seven shots.
Five different Pioneers recorded a shot in the match.
UW-Platteville returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 for a 1:30 p.m. match against Northwestern (Minn.) at Reynolds Field in St. Paul, Minn.
