Pioneers celebrate return with 2OT victory over Monmouth in season opener
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin Platteville women's soccer team defeated the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots 1-0 in double overtime at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. Wednesday's season opener marked the first competition in 669 days for the Pioneer squad along with Coach Sam Koenig's first contest as Director of Soccer.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin Platteville women's soccer team defeated the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots 1-0 in double overtime at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. Wednesday's season opener marked the first competition in 669 days for the Pioneer squad along with Coach Sam Koenig's first contest as Director of Soccer.
"It was amazing to win and build this family on the women's side," said Koenig. "So fun winning together as a group!"
Freshman Alyssa Peterson's first career goal in the 103rd minute secured the victory against the Fighting Scots and marked an exciting return to competition in front of over 300 fans.
UW-Platteville outshot Monmouth 23-15 as Peterson along with freshman teammates Lauren Lodico and Lydia Smith led the with four shots apiece. Senior Amber Lueder tallied three of her own.
Juniors Emma Ball and Onalee Erickson shared the night in goal with Ball recording one save in the first period while Erickson tallied eight across the second half and overtime. Monmouth's keeper Quinn Cutler recorded 13 saves before letting the game winning goal by with just over six minutes remaining.
UW-Platteville will have a day off before returning to Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. for the night game against Gustavus Adolphus.
