PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – UW-Platteville's Caelyn Steffens' goals over UW-Oshkosh's Titans not only clenched the 2-0 victory, but also the number four seed in the WIAC Tournament.
It is the first time since the 2013 season that the Pioneers have qualified for the WIAC Tournament. In order to make the tournament and host, UW-Platteville knew they had to top the Titans leading into Saturday night's game in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The first period was nearly scoreless until freshman Caelyn Steffens had a fast break down the right side in the 41st minute to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 right before the half and tally up Steffens 25th goal of the season.
Steffens struck once more to strengthen the Pioneers' lead in the 78th minute when her unassisted 26th goal hit the back-right corner and set the Pioneers ahead 2-0 with less than 12 minutes to go.
Kathryn Flaherty recorded seven saves on the night while the Titans held a 10-4 advantage on shots over the Pioneers. UW-Oshkosh had the edge in corner kicks with 4-2 while each team stacked up seven fouls apiece.
The Pioneers conclude their regular season 9-9 and 3-4 in the WIAC while the Titans fall to 7-10-1 and 3-4 in the league.
The Pioneers now move into the WIAC Tournament as the #4 seed and will host #5 seed UW-Whitewater on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
