Pioneers fall 2-3 in double overtime at Knox College

GALESBURG, Ill. – The UW-Platteville women's soccer team fell in double overtime 2-3 Sunday afternoon at Knox College.
The intense matchup saw a scoreless draw in the first half, two consecutive goals by the Pioneers within eight minutes, a late rally by Knox to force overtime, five yellow cards and one red card late in the second overtime before the sudden death goal to end the game.
The Pioneers took the lead early in the second half with an unassisted goal by Amber Lueder at the 50th minute. Just eight minutes later, a goal by Caelyn Steffens from Taylor Martin put the Pioneers ahead 2-0.
The Prairie Fire were able to bring the game within one with a 68th minute goal by Emma McCormick from Yvette Rodriguez. Knox then tied things up in the 81st minute to force overtime.
The first overtime went on to leave the teams tied 2-2 and then a red card on Caelyn Steffens two minutes into the second overtime left the Pioneers one position down and Knox successfully found the net at the 106th minute of play with a goal by Brooklyn Deming from Melissa London.
UW-Platteville totaled seven shots with five on frame compared to Knox's 25 shots and 15 on goal.
Pioneer goalkeeper, Kathryn Flaerty, racked up 12 saves on the day.
The Pioneers move to 5-3 overall for the season and will return to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they host Coe College at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
