MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer team shutout Cornell College, 3-0, in the Pioneers' season opener on Friday afternoon at Mount Vernon, Iowa.
"The first 10 minutes were played at a fast pace, but we did a good job settling in and get some offensive production," noted head coach Allison Stringer.
Senior Melissa Dunlavy connected from three yards out on a perfect corner kick by fellow senior Sarah Eck in the 30th-minute.
Eck took advantage of a penalty kick in the 50th-minute to give the Pioneers a 2-0.
Eck put the game completely out of reach with her second goal of the game in the 89th-minute when she drilled the ball from 10 yards out on left side through the near post, assisted by sophomore Jessica Butler.
"I am really impressed with the way we played for it being the first game of the season," said Stringer. "After having the offense struggle during our scrimmage this past week, I am very happy to see that the offense did the things we worked on during practice the past few days."
The Pioneers will have very little time to recover and enjoy the victory as the open their home slate on Saturday at 11 a.m. against St. Mary's (Minn.).
