Pioneers Lose Heartbreaker to UW-La Crosse, 1-0
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's soccer controlled the ball for nearly the entire match but it was not enough. A lapse on defense in the 66th minute proved to be the difference as the Pioneers dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting UW-La Crosse on Wednesday night at Pioneer Stadium.
UW-Platteville (5-8, 1-4 WIAC) recorded an 11 to 3 advantage in shots with Katie Viney and Anna Strasser each recording four shots in the loss.
UW-La Crosse (8-4-1, 3-1-1 WIAC) scored the game-winning goal when the Pioneers' goalkeeper Jade Jandt picked up the ball with one foot inside the goal box and one foot outside of it. The possession prompted a foul to be called on the Pioneers and set up a 10-yard free kick from the left post for the Eagles. Sarah Joost of UW-La Crosse sent the free kick inside the box and an alert Jamie Oschenwald headed it to the back of the net for the goal.
The Pioneers had opportunities throughout the game on UW-La Crosse goalkeeper Sagan Pizzingrilli, who stood up to the challenge to make five saves in her seventh shutout of the season. A shot by Viney in the third minute hit the cross bar and a sliding attempt by Strasser to equalize in the 78th minute came up short for UW-Platteville.
The Pioneers will resume its three-match homestand when they host UW-Stout on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m., following the Pioneer homecoming football game at 2 p.m.
