Pioneers Headlock Hunger against UW-Stevens Point
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Following a brazen start, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team fell 26-18 to UW-Stevens Point after the Pointers made a huge comeback Wednesday night in Williams Fieldhouse. As part of the annual Headlocking Hunger dual, the team collected hundreds of food items to be donated to the local food pantry, just in time for the holiday season.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Following a brazen start, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team fell 26-18 to UW-Stevens Point after the Pointers made a huge comeback Wednesday night in Williams Fieldhouse. As part of the annual Headlocking Hunger dual, the team collected hundreds of food items to be donated to the local food pantry, just in time for the holiday season. Attendees could also receive free admission upon donations to the food drive.
The Pioneers opened the WIAC dual by taking four of the first five matches to pull ahead 18-5 at the start of the dual. Opening the match at 125, sophomore Chris Karbash pinned Austin Gray in 6:32 to put the Pioneers ahead 6-0. Freshman Brady Grennan used his teammate's energy to defeat Aiden Fonder by 16-6 major decision in the 133 match.
The Pointers cut UW-Platteville's lead to 10-5 after the 141 match up, but junior Trent DuMont got the Pioneers back on track at 149 pounds, winning his match after a 6-2 decision. Senior David Cushman then extended the Pioneers lead to 18-5 following a 19-2 tech fall (5:45) at 157.
After an intermission, the Pointers returned and found momentum of their own, taking each of the final five weight classes.
The Pioneers will return to action this Saturday, Dec. 14 for a non-conference dual at the University of Dubuque at 4 p.m.
