UW-Platteville plays host to WIAC championships
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville team successfully hosted the 69th annual Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wrestling championships Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse. Four Pioneers placed sixth in their respective weight classes, including freshman Chris Karbash at 125, junior David Cushman at 157, sophomore Blake Delsman at 165 and senior Marty Koenig at 184.

In the hotly contested team race, UW-La Crosse and UW-Eau Claire tied with 161.5 team points and were named co-champions, a first in WIAC history. The Eagles claimed their eighth straight title as the Blugolds secured their first title in program history. First-year Coach Topher Carton led the host Pioneers to a fifth-place finish, finishing ahead of UW-Oshkosh.
Four Pioneers placed sixth in their respective weight classes, including freshman Chris Karbash at 125. He led the Pioneers with a pair of pins, stopping UW-Stevens Point's Aiden Fonder in 4:09 and UW-Oshkosh's JP Culver in 2:58.
Junior David Cushman had two of the most exciting matches, beating UW-Stevens Point's Easton Hull in sudden victory in the quarterfinals and then falling to UW-Whitewater's Jermaine Butler in the same fashion in the semifinals at 157.
Sophomore Blake Delsman won twice at 165, including a pin over UW-Whitewater's Mason Hoopman in 1:20. Marty Koenig, the Pioneers' lone senior, recorded two victories at 184, including a 15-3 major decision over UW-Stevens Point's Jack Callen in the opening round.
