Five Wrestlers Earn NWCA Scholar Honors

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Five members of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team earned National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar All-America honors for the 2022-23 season. Seniors Brett Schoenherr, Zach Thompson, Nathan Wynsma and Coy Ruess, and sophomore Tyler Hannah each collected the academic honor.

As a team, the Pioneers finished 30^th overall in the NWCA with a cumulative team GPA of 3.4826. It was the first time since the 2018-19 season that UW-Platteville finished inside the top 30.

An animal science major, Schoenherr earned the award for the second time in his Pioneers career with a 3.664 GPA. The senior finished the year 26-9 and finished fourth at 285 pounds in the WIAC Tournament and sixth at regionals.

Thompson received the honors for the second straight year and holds a 3.298 GPA as a physical education major. The senior went 11-1 on the year and placed sixth at 133 pounds in the regional tournament.

Wynsma finished with a 3.680 GPA as an environmental horticulture major to collect the award for the third time. The senior finished the year 13-3 at 165 pounds with a runner-up in the finish in the conference tournament and a sixth-place mark at regionals.

Ruess boasts a 3.964 GPA as a civil engineering major to earn the award for the first time. The senior went 15-14 on the season and took sixth at the regional meet in the 165-pound weight class.

Hannah earned All-American honors after placing sixth at the NCAA DIII Championships in the 197-pound weight class. The business administration major holds a 3.407 GPA and put together an impressive season that included winning the regional title in his weight class.
