Seven Pioneers advance to second day of NCAA Upper Midwest Regional
Mequon, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team sits 4 of 19 teams after the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional, hosted by Concordia Wisconsin. Seven Pioneers advance to the final day of competition in hopes of securing a top-three finish in order to qualify for the National Championships. Over the course of the day, the Pioneers collectively tallied eight falls, four technical falls and one major decision.

Over the course of the day, the Pioneers collectively tallied eight falls, four technical falls and one major decision.
Pioneers advancing to Saturday's competition:
133 – Zach Thompson
157 – Aiden Brosinski

At 133 pounds, Thompson had a dominate performance in the first day, pinning his first opponent before defeating the next with an 8-0 major decision to advance to Saturday's semifinal.
Wrestling at 157 pounds, Brosinski defeated his first opponent with a 9-3 decision and pinned his next challenger (2:46) to punch his ticket to the semifinal.
Ruess picked up a win by fall (4:25) in his first match of the day at 165 pounds, but suffered a 4-1 defeat to #7 ranked Noah Leisgang of UW-La Crosse. The senior finished the day strong and kept national hopes alive with a decisive 20-2 tech fall (4:00).
In the 174 bracket, Wynsma added another team fall (0:41) in the opening round. The senior suffered a loss in the quarterfinal, but Wynsma kept dreams of Nationals alive with a 9-3 decision.
Competing in his first regional event, Ross took off strong and pinned his first opponent at 184 pounds. After a narrow 3-2 loss in the quarterfinal, Ross bounced by and recorded a second pin of the day (2:33).
Hannah kept things rolling at 197 pounds and defeated both opponents of the day by fall (1:13) and by 6-1 decision in the quarterfinal.
Schoenherr settled his placement in the 285 pounds bracket with a 19-4 tech fall (6:22) victory in the prelims. The Pioneer registered another tech fall (19-1) in the next round, but moved to the left side of the bracket following a loss by fall in the quarterfinal. Needing to win the final match of the night to compete on Saturday, Schoenherr dug deep and won by 4-0 decision.
Also competing on Friday was Nolan McKittrick at 125 pounds. McKittrick started of with a dominate 18-0 tech fall in the First Round. Wrestling at 141 pounds, Alec Schmacht kept busy and picked up a 10-5 decision in the prelim. Schmacht also tallied a win by fall (0:35). The tenth wrestler was Brock Parker who competed at 149 pounds. Unfortunately, Parker suffered an injury in his first match of the day which brought the senior's season to a close.
The second day of competition starts at 11 a.m. in the CUW fieldhouse.
