Pointers edge Pioneers in conference clash

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team dropped the first conference dual of the season with a 19-16 road loss at UW-Stevens Point. Ultimately, the final decision of the night broke a 16-16 tie and edged the WIAC dual in favor of the Pointers (5-2, 1-2 WIAC). 

The Pioneers (1-1, 0-1 WIAC) were first on the board with a 7-2 decision win at 125 pounds by junior Isaac Wiegel.

The Pointers responded and took a narrow 4-3 lead after the second match, but junior Zach Thompson defeated Drew Willeman at 141 pounds by 8-5 decision to regain the lead, 6-4. Junior Brock Parker extended that lead to 10-4 after a 10-2 major decision at 149 pounds. 

UW-Stevens Pointed closed the gap in the next match and locked the score at 10-10 halfway through the dual with a pin at 157 pounds. 

Junior Nathan Wynsma suffered a 4-2 loss in sudden victory at 165 pounds to Brandon Peckham, but senior teammate Nick Dado followed with a 3-2 decision at 174 pounds to tie the dual again, this time 13-13. 

The Pointers won the next match, but freshman Tyler Hannah knotted the score with an 8-4 decision at 197 pounds to leave it up to the final two wrestlers of the night to decide the fate of the meet.

The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 4 when they hit the road for the MSOE Invite in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 9 a.m.
