Wiegel and Thompson claim titles for Pioneers
Platteville, Wis.- It has been 638 days since the University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team wrestled a home match. The Pioneers welcomed the University of Dubuque, Loras College, Cornell College, and the University of Chicago to Williams Fieldhouse for the 2021 Platteville Invite.
Platteville, Wis.- It has been 638 days since the University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team wrestled a home match. The Pioneers welcomed the University of Dubuque, Loras College, Cornell College, and the University of Chicago to Williams Fieldhouse for the 2021 Platteville Invite.
Junior Isaac Wiegel and junior Zach Thompson claimed titles in the 125 and 133 weight classes for the Pioneers. Wiegel (125) opened his day with a 13-3 major decision over Justin Murray of Loras College. Wiegel advanced to the finals after a 4-1 decision over Cade Hornback of the University of Dubuque. In the finals, Wiegel defeated another Loras wrestler in a 5-4 decision to claim the title.
Thompson (133) path to the finals started with a pin of Cornell's Keegan Schultschik. Thompson got past University of Dubuque wrestler Carson Sauriol by 15-3. In the finals, Thompson took down Aiden Evans of Loras 7-4 to claim the title.
Juniors Zach Licht (141) and Nathan Wynsma (165) reached the finals in their respective weight classes, before falling in the finals. Sophomore Brandon Tessau finished third at 174 to finish off top-three finishers for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. when Cornell College returns for a dual. All Veterans and military personal will receive free admission.
