The UW-La Crosse Eagles bested the UW-Platteville 27-6 Thursday night in Williams Fieldhouse in the first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual of the season.
The Eagles won eight of the 10 weight classes and the Pioneers' victories came from 149-pound Gavin Burch and 184-pound Jon Goetz. Burch topped Cal Hansen in an exciting final second frenzy 12-8 while Goetz topped Isaac Lahr in a 5-3 decision.
The Pioneers move to 1-1 for the season after the non-conference win over Cornel College while the Eagles, who defeated UW-Eau Claire 39-6 last week, remain undefeated 2-0.
Thursday night also marked the fourth annual Headlocking Hunger competition to collect non-perishable items for the local food banks. Each year, the 16 UW-Platteville athletic teams compete against one another to see who can collect the most food to donate for a chance to claim the Headlocking Hunger Champion Belt. Each team weighs-in the food collected and the team with the most food collected wins. This year, the Pioneer Wrestling team won the championship belt and the 16 Pioneer teams collected a combined 2,282 pounds of non-perishable food to be donated to the Pioneer Provisions free pantry.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Augsburg Invite in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
