PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team earned the 2017 National Wrestling Coaches Association award NCAA Division III team scholar-award, and had two athletes win individual honors.
As a team the Pioneers finished 25th overall in the NWCA with a cumulative team GPA of 3.18. Jon Goetz earned a 3.218 and Grant Wedepohl finished with a 3.45 to take home individual honors. Goetz is a sophomore from West Bend, Wisconsin and is an Environmental Engineering major and Grant Wedepohl is a sophomore from Reedsville, Wisconsin and is an Engineering Physics major.
"The time demands of being a student-athlete are obviously challenging and these awards indicate our team's ability to succeed in both endeavors," Coach Mike DeRoehn said. "To earn national recognition for our strong team GPA and having individual student-athletes earn Academic All American honors is terrific! It demonstrates that our program continued to make forward progress this season, on and off the mat."
Wedepohl and Goetz qualified for the honor by finishing with GPA's above 3.20 and advancing the Division III wrestling championships in the 2017 season.
