Pioneers walkoff with win over Titans

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team overcame a 19-8 deficit to beat host UW-Oshkosh 22-19, clinching the match with a walkoff pin.

The Pioneers' D'Andre Johnson faced pinned Elijah Burdick the 285-pound match, needing at least a victory to prevent a Pioneer loss, as the Titans led 19-16. Johnson not only won the final match, he did so with a pinfall in 4:28, giving the Pioneers six points and the comeback win.

 UW-Platteville improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches, while the Titans fell to 2-2, 1-2.

Grant Wedepohl began the Pioneer comeback at 184, defeating Patrick Reilly 14-3, and Josh Cannon followed with a 12-4 win over John DePersia at 197, setting the stage for the decisive match.

Scott Arneson earned the first UW-Platteville win of the night, getting a technical fall over Reiss Bielski at 133. Michael Belanger won a tight match at 165, beating Aristide Serrano 3-1.

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday at the MSOE Invitational in Milwaukee then have two WIAC matches next week. UW-Platteville wrestles at UW-Stevens Point Thursday at 7 p.m. and is home to UW-Whitewater Saturday, Dec. 10 at noon.
