The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team competed at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wrestling Championships on Sunday, Feb. 14 at UW-Stevens Point, where they placed fourth as a team.
Freshman Scott Arneson received the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet title for his 133-weight class win over UW-Whitewater's Joe Brodman. Arneson pinned Brodman at the 6:55 mark, earning himself first place in his weight-class.
Six other Pioneers also placed in the meet, including senior Mason Bohm, freshman Jacob Carpenter, freshman Grant Wedepohl, senior Bryant Etherton, freshman Joshua Cannon, and freshman D'Andre Johnson.
Bohm earned fifth place for the Pioneers after pinning UW-Whitewater's Maxx Hubbard in the first round of the 149-weight class match.
In the 174-weight class, Carpenter fell to UW-Oshkosh's Julius Smith 8-2 in the fifth place match, earning himself a sixth place finish.
Wedepohl made it to the fifth place match where he dominated his UW-Whitewater opponent, winning the 184-weight class in a major decision 11-0.
In the 197-weight class, two Pioneers in Etherton and Cannon showed their strengths, Etherton making it to the championship match and Cannon to the fifth place match. Etherton fell in an 8-2 decision to UW-Lacrosse's Sean Ward, earning himself a second place title. He was also named to the All-Sportsmanship team for the tournament, an honor that one wrestler from each team holds.
In Cannon's fifth place match, he defeated UW-Eau Claire's Cecil Philson in a major decision 10-0 win to earn the fifth place rank.
When it came time for the 285-weight class, Johnson fought his way to the championship match, but fell to fellow freshman Clay Broze of UW-La Crosse in an 8-4 decision.
Two Pioneers also received their WIAC Athlete of the Week plaques at the conference championships on Sunday, including Bohm for his 4-0 performance at the Pioneer Invitational on Nov. 7 and Johnson for his pin against nationally-ranked Broze at UW-La Crosse on Jan. 16.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the NCAA West Regional Meet.
