PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Platteville head wrestling coach Mike DeRoehn will be hosting a Coaches Clinic on Saturday, Oct. 4 which will feature a presentation by Hall of Fame/Legendary Coach Jim Miller.
The Pioneer Coaches Clinic is geared toward youth, middle school and high school coaches interested in learning and improving in order to best serve the needs of your athletes. This opportunity not just to learn new technique for the upcoming season but how to coach/teach the necessary skills, drills, strategies and tactics proven to be effective time and time again in youth/high school wrestling.
Coach Miller, now retired, led Wartburg College to an amazing 10 NCAA Championships along with 21 Conference Championships over a 22 year period. His teams at Wartburg did not lose an Iowa Conference Dual meet from 1994-2013. Coach Miller brings a broad range of experiences having also successfully coached at the high school and NCAA Division I level. He previously served for eight years as the top assistant at the University of Northern Iowa where he was honored as an assistant Coach of the Year in 1989. Prior to moving to UNI, he was an assistant coach at Riceville High School and a head coach at Charles City High School, where he compiled a 55-10 record. He was named Iowa High School Coach of the Year in 1979 and Iowa's Freestyle Coach of the Year in 1982.
Coach DeRoehn is in his first season leading the UW-Platteville Pioneer Wrestling Program. He has the unique experience of coaching athletes at all age levels, from kindergarten wrestlers up through the 2012 Olympic Trials. In 2010 he was named the Greco-Roman Junior National Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling, and in 2011 named USA Wrestling Kids/Cadet Person of the Year.
The clinic is aimed to equip each coach in attendance with increased knowledge in the areas of how to teach wrestling technique and also share content on practice planning, cutting edge strength and conditioning for wrestling, ideas on implementing a training system for your athletes, goal setting (& more importantly how to get your athletes to FOLLOW THROUGH), successful fundraising initiatives and much more. Coach Miller will also present on two very important topics-"Building a Championship Culture" as well as "Peaking Your Team". This presentation alone will help you strengthen and improve the results of your program.
