PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Sophomore 125-pounder Cole Ferguson is looking to enter rarefied air Friday at the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Ferguson, a native of Joliet, Ill., will attempt to become the first Pioneer since Jesse Milks in 2010 to earn wrestling All-American honors.
Throughout the season, Ferguson has been one of the Pioneers' most consistent performers, posting a 19-6 record overall, with two pins and four major decisions. Ferguson has had a solid ending to his season, as he had a six-match winning streak midway through the West Regional Meet before he lost in the semifinals to the eventual champion.
Ferguson earned his way to Nationals by taking third in the West Regional Meet, winning the third-place match 7-4. Ferguson has had experience against two members of the 18-man bracket, and despite losing those matches by decision, has shown he is able to contend with top-tier talent.
Wrestling begins Friday morning at 11 a.m., as Ferguson squares off with the second-seeded Gilberto Camacho from Wartburg, who enters the tournament with a 14-1 record.
