Pioneers Drop Dual to UW-Oshkosh, 36-17
Two pins and a technical fall were not enough on Senior Night as the University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team dropped its final home dual of the 2011-12 season to WIAC rival, UW-Oshkosh, 36-17.
After giving up a forfeit at 125 to start the dual, the Pioneers rattled off back to back wins at 133 and 141. In the victory at 133, junior T.J. Wunnicke posted a 15-0 technical fall win over David Rosenau. The effort by Wunnicke was dominating as he had three 3-point nearfalls and two 2-point nearfalls to control the contest.
After the win by Wunnicke, Tyler Henken put UW-Platteville rallied from a 6-2 deficit to Alex Mueller of UW-Oshkosh and recorded a fall 23 seconds into the third period. The Hebron, Illinois native was behind 6-1 after the first period and started to control the match with an early escape in the second period. Then to start the third period, Henken took advantage of a scramble around the mat to record the fall. For Henken, it is his seventh pin of the season.
The Titans regained the momentum, winning the next six matches including four by fall. However, the Pioneers ended the night with its second fall of the night when freshman heavyweight Bryant Etherton dominated his match from the opening whistle. The Bolingbrook, Illinois native picked up the second fall of his young career to close out the contest.
Next, this weekend, the Pioneers will travel to Loras on Saturday for the Duhawk Open.
