Reif named coach of the year

UW-Platteville's Pete Reif, who began the Pioneer women's golf program from scratch, was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Sunday after the league meet in Eau Claire.

The Pioneers competed as a team for the first time in the WIAC championships this weekend, and even though they finished fifth out of five teams, every UWP golfer improved her score from the first day to the second.

Linda Engelke and Krista Puttkammer were 14th and 15, respectively, shooting 187 and 188 over the two days and 36 holes. Rebecca Fish finished a stroke behind at 189, and Tasha Terrill shot 200.

Host UW-Eau Claire captured the team title.

UWP to compete in WIAC championships

For the first time, UW-Platteville will have a team score in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's women's golf championships.

The fledging Pioneer program will compete in the WIAC meet Saturday and Sunday at Mill Run Golf Course, Eau Claire.

The Pioneers are led by junior Krista Puttkammer, who finished 16th individually in last year's WIAC meet. She is averaging 84.8 per 18 holes this season.

Senior Tasha Terrill also has WIAC experience. She was 29th in last year's championships. Sophomore Linda Engelke and freshman Rebecca Fish will round out the squad for the Pioneers. All three have had at least one round in the 80s this season.

Pioneers 9th at Oshkosh

The UW-Platteville golf team placed ninth among 12 teams at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational.

Krista Puttkammer led the team with a 12-place finish, shooting a 176, including an 85 on the first day. Linda Engelke fired a 188 to place 29th, while Rebecca Fish was 48th and Tasha Terrill 59th.

The Pioneers will compete in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships Saturday and Sunday at UW-Eau Claire.

Pioneers fare well at IWU

The UW-Platteville women's golf team played against some of the Midwest's top NCAA II and III schools and placed 17th out of 23 teams at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.

The Pioneers, in their first year of team competition, had all four golfers shoot in the 80s on Saturday. Krista Puttkammer shot 83-81 to finish 34th, and Rebecca Fish shot 83-84 to place 45 and lead the team scores. Linda Engelke (89-95) and Tasha Terrill (89-100) both had one round in the 80s and finished ahead of at least 20 other golfers.

The Pioneers play at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational next weekend.

Pioneers second

The UW-Platteville women's golf team was second in a triangular at a meet hosted by Clarke College Wednesday at the Bunker Hill Golf Course in Dubuque.

Loras won the team title with 330, while the Pioneers shot 387 and Upper Iowa 404.

Krista Puttkammer and Rebecca Fish took second and third, respectively. Puttkammer shot a 78, two strokes off the medalist's pace. Fish carded an 81.

The Pioneers are back in action this weekend at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.

UWP 8th of 14 schools

The UW-Platteville women's golf team finished eighth out of 14 teams at the UW-Whitewater Invitational.

The scheduled two-day tournament was shortened to just Saturday because of the weather.

Krista Puttkammer shot an 81 to take fifth place overall. Tasha Terrill carded a 91 and Linda Engelke a 93 for the Pioneers, who are competing in team tournaments for the first time ever.

Pioneers 12th at UWEC

The Pioneer golf team made its first-ever appearance in a team-scored event, finishing 12th of 13 teams at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational.

The young UWP program was led by Krista Puttkammer, who finished 16th individually out of 87 golfers. She tallied an 89 and 87 over the two days. Freshman Linda Engelke was the next highest Pioneer finisher, placing 60th.

The Pioneers golf at UW-Whitewater next Saturday and Sunday.

Pioneers begin season

UWP's newest sport, women's golf, begins with a tournament at UW-Eau Claire Saturday and Sunday. The Pioneers will field a full roster for the first time in its three years as a varsity sport.

The Pioneers and coach Pete Reif have experienced golfers in Krista Puttkammer and Tasha Terrill.

Puttkammer placed 16th in the league tournament last year, and also placed fourth in a tournament at UW-Eau Claire in the spring.
