Pair of Pioneers Earn All-Tournament Honors at 2012 WIAC Golf Championship
Led by a pair of all-conference performances by seniors Kellsey Welter and Kelsey Lieving, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's golf team finished fifth at the 2012 WIAC Women's Golf Championship at Bull's Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. It is the fourth time in program history that UW-Platteville has had multiple all-tournament honorees. The Pioneers had multiple honorees in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
The Pioneers shot a 54-hole total of 1088, +224 (365-373-350) en route to a fifth-place finish. UW-Stout edged UW-Whitewater for the team title by one stroke with a 54-hole total of 1024, +160 (351-333-340). The Blue Devils were led by Brit McNett-Emmerich, who was the individual champion as she posted a 54-hole total of 234, +18 (83-78-73).
For UW-Platteville, it is the first all-tournament honor for Welter, who shot a 54-hole total of 254, +38 (83-84-87). It is the third top-20 finish at the WIAC Championship for the Kaukauna, Wisconsin native. Welter had 25 pars to go along with two birdies throughout the 54-hole tournament.
Lieving picked up her second all-tournament honor, who also earned the honor last year. She made a significant surge in Sunday's final with an 11-stroke improvement from Saturday as the Geneseo, Illinois native finished with a 257, +41 (88-90-79). Lieving closed out her final round with 13 pars including five of the last six holes.
Freshman Taylor Egnarski shot a final round of 89 to finish with a 54-hole total of 285, +69 (97-99-89) to finish tied for 32nd and sophomore Katie Gregorich posted a round of 95 on Sunday for a 54-hole total of 292, +76 (97-100-95) to finish tied for 36th. Junior Stacy Heiling recorded a round of 98 in the final 18 holes to finish with a 303, +87 (101-104-98) to place 41st and sophomore Ashley Morales was 47th with a 54-hole total of 323 (106-107-110), +107.
The tournament wraps up the fall portion of the schedule for the Pioneers, who will participate in a spring schedule that will begin in March 2013.
