Pioneers have best rounds in 6 years at WIAC meet
UW-Platteville cracked the 340 mark for the first time in six years, and the Pioneers did so twice while finishing fourth in the three-day Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships at Bull's Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids.
The Pioneers came back from a first-day 359 to fire rounds of 334 and 338, finishing fourth overall with a 1,031 score. UW-Eau Claire won its second straight title with a 989.
Tricia Pawelski and Kelsey Lieving both turned in top 10 finishes. Pawelski shot 81 both Saturday and Sunday and finished with a 252 to place eighth. Lieving broke 80 for the first time in her two-year collegiate career Sunday with a 79 and finished ninth at 253. Kellsey Welter had rounds of 87, 87, 86 to finish 16th with a 260, while Kerrie Liske's round of 85 Saturday was the 10th best of the day. She was 30th with a 272 overall. Ellyn Subak was 34th with a 279, which included a 90 on Friday.
Peter Reif was named the WIAC co-coach of the year. Reif, the only leader in the program's 11-year history, earned the award for the third time. He built the largest roster in Pioneer history in 2010.
Liske, a junior from Donahue, Iowa (North Scott High School), earned a spot on the WIAC all-Sportmanship Team. The squad honors individuals who display exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
