Pioneers open with exhibition loss at Northwestern

Posted October 31, 2010

UW-Platteville's women's basketball tested itself against the Big 10 in its first outing under Coach Megan Wilson, as the Pioneers fell 85-30 to host Northwestern in a Sunday exhibition game.

The Wildcats scored the first 20 points before Ashley Wolf made a jump shot at the 12:29 mark in the first half in Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats took a 48-18 halftime lead.

Brittany Orban led four Wildcats in double figures with 22 points. Northwestern, with first-team all-Big Ten center Amy Jaeschke (17 points), shot 61 percent in the first half and 52 percent in the game.

The Pioneers were led by Claire Poad's six points and Ashley Henry's eight rebounds. The final statistics were not the real value of this game for the Pioneers, with just two sophomore returning starters from last year's 12-13 squad, Wilson said.

"It was a great experience for the kids," she said. "They get a better idea on the speed of the game. It's a great preparation for the season, especially for the WIAC."
