Pioneers win conference opener

UW-Platteville won its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Saturday, defeating UW-Superior 86-69 on Bo Ryan Court and improved to 6-1 for the first time ever..

Stacia Nemitz scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Pioneersl. Claire Poad added 18 points, including a three-point basket with 9:13 remaining to give the Pioneers the lead for good at 57-56. Liz Lawinger added 14 points and joined Poad with four steals, while Ashley Mullholland came off the bench to score a career-high 10 points. Charity Stotmeister, who missed the first nine minutes while finishing up her law school entrance exams, added eight points and five rbeounds.

"It was big," Nemitz said. "We put a lot of effort and time into it this week. We knew how important it was to start out 1-0."

Kelsey Thingvold and Connie Urmanski each scored 12 for the Yellowjackets (3-3 overall, 0-2 WIAC), while Anna Peterson and Hailey Hart each scored 11.

UWS scored the first six points of the game, but the Pioneers tallied the next 15. UWP led 34-26 at the half. Superior tied the contest at 44-44 on Peterson's jumper and took the 56-54 lead on Kaitlyn Houser's three-point shot. UWS was still within 59-58 until the Pioneers scored the next nine points for a 68-58 bulge.

The Pioneers forced 29 Yellowjacket turnovers, leading to 39 points and the 6-1 start.

"It's really a good feeling and something to be proud of," Nemitz said.
